cryptocurrencies

When people first heard about Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies, they had a good laugh. “I’d never give up my physical gold for this fake digital thing,” they scoffed. But now, after bitcoin has shot past every other currency in market value and continues to rise, the skeptics are looking more foolish by the day. Cryptocurrencies are the real deal–just like Gold used to be–and it’s here to stay.

cryptocurrencies

Cryptocurrency is all the rage these days–more so than ever before. Many people still don’t get it, though. Let’s explain what it is and what the hype is all about.

Eventually, it was inevitable that something would emerge that was intended to do for money what the internet has done for information management.

So it went in early 2008 as an idea by a mysterious technology enthusiast going by the name of Satoshi Nakamoto. His idea was for a currency without any central issuing authority. Not the government, not the Federal Reserve. Just an algorithm that would create new money and process transactions made in that money. And he called it Bitcoin.

The concept is compelling at first glance: Create a form of currency not controlled by any central authority whose creation is limited (as in limited to 21 million bitcoins), whose exchange is untraceable, and which has no physical form but only exists as a digital file on computers somewhere.

At the time, a number of businesses accepted bitcoins as payment, mostly online-based companies such as Reddit and WordPress. A year later, though, the exchange rate of one bitcoin to the U.S. dollar was still less than $10.

Why? The currency was difficult to acquire. You had to go through a cumbersome process of downloading special software onto your computer system and using it to “mine” for bitcoins in a distributed network that would ultimately issue 21 million units of the currency (about 12 million have been issued so far). And if you thought that you could make money mining bitcoins, you were wrong.
